Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a sulfur-containing organic compound. At room temperature, it is a colorless and odorless transparent liquid with strong hygroscopic properties, freezing point is 18.55ºC, and density is close to 1.100 g/mL with water.

It can be miscible with both aqueous solution and most organic solvents. It can dissolve about 80% of the compounds, and most of the water-soluble compounds and fat-soluble compounds can be dissolved by it, so DMSO is also known as "universal solvent".
